Sure! Certainly not all but many People Who Stutter (PWS) obtain greater fluency by slowing down (or other techniques) their speech rate. Simple right? Not so simple for many. Because of the hardwiring I speak of it can only be done for a short while before speech speeds up and becomes more disfluent again. For many it feels weird and alien (ironically, even in the midst of tremendous disfluencies) to speak slower even though it gives them greater fluency. The internal connections inside the brain that allows a PWS to monitor-gauge-adjust speech for greater fluency is faulty. No fault of the PWS but rather because of the neurological hardwiring inside the brain. Stuttering is a neurological problem. The psychological components that people experience is more likely an overlay of having to live with stuttering for years into adolescence and adulthood.
