I have had a stutter since I could learn to speak. A lot of folks who have a stutter have gone through years of speech therapy, so much so that it isn’t as detectable anymore unless they’re under stress or have received an injury to their vocal chords or brain. Severe stutters may be embarrassing for the people with them and so they may avoid speaking on the phone, making social media posts and so on. It’s not that we aren’t there, it’s that we’ve had speech therapy or are too shy to make the effort to speak to people. I went through a decade of speech therapy, most people don’t know I have a stutter and in fact I work in a call center environment. When I was a kid I was incomprehensible it was that severe. Stutters do run in families as my uncle has one which I find interesting.
