In the 90s, I worked at White Castle (a fast food chain) during highschool and college. They put me on drive thru then laughed at me when I stuttered. Beautiful experience through, looking back, it gave me an opportunity to talk more. Fast forward to today, I am working in high tech leading a group of engineers and doing a ton of talking in meetings. My speech/fluency is the best it has ever been. Also I volunteer and do some environmental activism where I talk at public meetings and to elected officials. I still stutter today, but it doesn't stop me from doing things. During my schooling days, stuttering got me sad and depressed, but it got better as I gained confidence and lost my anxiety towards speaking.
