I did… I went to the local NSA chapter for a year. I found it a mixed bag of people… Adult PWS wanting to learn how to improve their fluency… Parents with questions on how to “fix” their children… University speech pathologists that contributed nothing other than to show up once or twice and use us to practice their clinical observation skills… “Entrepreneur”/snake oil salespeople wanting to use us as a preliminary focus group for whatever magic pill/device they wanted to make millions peddling… And a (retired) group moderator who spent her time with a semi-captive audience, regaling us of her personal hardships and constantly questioning why all the PWS’s didn’t just accept stuttering and stop trying for fluency. I can say I did it, but the ROI wasn’t great for me. Still, I met one older gentleman who shared my approach and goals and I liked talking with him. So, not entirely wasted time. I would encourage you to go at least once and see if the group is actually supportive, and to see if they align with your personal goals. If you are there to seek fluency improvement, make that known at your introduction. Good luck and good job on being courageous and making the first steps.
