My dad had a bad stutter up until the age of 11 or 12 until he got over it through speech therapy. Now, his is barely noticeable unless he drinks a lot of coffee and does some minor repetitions. He still considers himself having a stutter, even though his speech is probably >99% fluent. I felt and still do feel shame for not having overcome my stuttering in my mid-twenties. I get the impression whenever I stutter in front of him, this sense of shame and judgement, although it could be a self-projection. Ironically, my mom was more understanding of my stutter than my dad, even though she didn't have one.
