Especially when during a really important conversation or gatherings. This is a strongly diverse metaphor but It’s like if an addict is at a party/gathering and someone’s offering them drinks (or whatever else) instead of them just saying no thanks they could say “I’m dealing with____, I struggle with____” . The person will understand then offer an alternative for them while still treating them as equal. I know being an addict and having a stutter are completely different but to let people know your situation beforehand allows you stop missing out on life experiences.
