In fairness to the receptionist, she tried to be as accommodating as she knew how. Severe stuttering can look like a developmental delay or a neuromuscular disorder and is very rarely encountered "in the wild." If this sort of thing is common for OP, maybe carrying around a note card that declares the stutter may be helpful during times of severe blocks.
