Time wise, I don’t know if this is possible for you, but if you really want to make headway with this kid, your best bet would be to try and become friends and transcend beyond your official tutor status. According to his mother, it sounds like he’s okay at home. If you could play games with him for 10-15 minutes before or after the session, that could really help. Jenga, magic tricks, card games, etc. Something to lighten the mood that is simply fun and doesn’t necessarily have to be math-related at all. Maybe even speak to his mother privately about this as she would know what kind of things might interest him. Although it’s also good to try new things that he hasn’t done before because that could be extra fun for him. Good luck! And I think we would all be genuinely interested in hearing how things go.
