I agree that therapy is helpful. Yet, most of the methode (if not all) can be written down. How would you improve the 3 steps that I wrote down? **Step 1:** * close your eyes (*to avoid getting distracted when focusing on the hand movement in front of the diaphragm*) * breathe in while moving your hand downwards in front of the diaphragm (to distract yourself from triggers, and maladaptive responses. For example, by focusing on the hand movement we intentionally attempt to avoid (1) monitoring to adjust speech production, (2) overthinking, or (3) overreacting) * then breathe out while moving your hand upwards (*the hand movements represent the direction of the internal airflow induced by the diaphragm, see YT videos on the diaphragm movement* ([1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrMCLbh032M&ab_channel=LungFoundationAustralia)) ([2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WD5a7cFTGo&ab_channel=%E5%81%A5%E6%B0%A3%E5%AE%B6%E5%91%BC%E5%90%B8%E5%81%A5%E5%BA%B7%E5%A0%B1%E5%A0%B1)) ([3](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf8xTqfspp4&ab_channel=TutorVista))) * breathe in while moving your hand downwards again * then speak while moving your hand upwards. But only start speaking, once you have successfully diverted attention from triggers (*such as, anticipating negative reactions, or stuttering anticipation*) * don't speak slower, monotonous or like a robot. Just speak natural, spontaneous and with normal rhythm and intonation * practice the DF method with strangers the whole day downtown or around central station to desensitize **Step 2:** * only proceed to step 2 if you have not stuttered in step 1 for two consecutive days * open your eyes * stop using the hand movement * instead, visualize in your mind the up- and downwards motion of the diaphragm (*as a distraction from triggers, such as, stuttering anticipation and negative reactions*) * if you stutter even one time in step 2, then go back to step 1 **Step 3:** * don't apply the del ferro method. Produce subconscious speech like a non-stutterer * if you stutter even one time (*or, you avoid how or what you wanted to say, or you implement maladaptive behaviors, or your speech production is not natural and spontaneous*), then go back to step 2 Conclusion: The del ferro methode addresses: the reaction to triggers, stop blaming wrong factors (e.g., thinking that fear results in stuttering instead of the maladaptive reactions), not avoiding fear or difficult situations, developing self-efficacy in speaking fluently (instead of being convinced in the sensation of loss of control, instead of immersing in the feared word, anticipation, perceived conflict, or negative experiences), and perceiving challenges as an opportunity instead.
