New to stuttering Hi everyone…my stutter started on Monday and I’m scared. My doctor has been running tests all week and it turns out I have inflammation in the arteries in my brain. The stuttering is a rare symptom of a rare condition for someone my age (37) and my doctor doesn’t know if my stutter will improve with treatment, we’re in uncharted waters here. My career is public speaking; I present at large conferences, workshops, webinars, etc. for a living. Now suddenly I can’t string together a sentence without blocks. My diaphragm (I think?) gets sore from trying to speak. But I can sing without blocks! Is that typical? I don’t know anyone who has been though this and I feel so alone. Edit: Thank you to those of you who reached out with support. Upon the recommendations of several people here, I saw a Speech Pathologist and it was really helpful. As my condition improves so should my fluency, but in the meantime I have some great exercises to help with my posture and breathing that make a huge difference with my speech when the inflammation in my head is bad. A big thank you to this lovely community!
