Aspiring law student here in the Philippines. Currently in my application period. I applied to 4 law school. Even with those numbers, I had one school that is like my back-up school (described it as a backup because it is a relatively great school, not really expensive unlike those too elite universities and it is near to me) when all of those other three failed (as all of those are part of the top law school in our country). Anyway, long story short. I stutter since my childhood days, often triggering on formal events, can’t even say my name most of the time. Endured it in college, somehow, it became less (maybe because I was part of healthy spaces), I was one of those students would participate in every recitation and would often debate my profs lol. But the pandemic came and it somehow made it worse. Fast forward to now, I was just recently diagnosed (even with a psych degree, I thought I was experiencing selective mutism as it happens on some occasions. Because of financial and work I was still unable to schedule my speech therapy thad was recommended to me by my therapist. But anyway, sorry for that long background, I had to explain and give context for you to understand as it is currently my hell. Read a lot on the internet about lawyers who stutter and I seem to get a lot of info and personal statements, even from law professors themselves, mostly in the US. I just had my interview last month from my backup school. The interview went online (my trigger). Was able to speak a little on my introduction but on the whole time, I opted to chat. I went on panicked mode, my chats were not also detailed to my interview plan. They somehow grilled me, giving me the reality that law school may not be fit for me as a person who stutters and—listen to this— that profs may not be as understanding. Right after the interview I wrote a letter of appeal, proving my intent to apply despite my stuttering because legally speaking, as someone with a disability, I deserve to be given proper admission to education of my choice. I’m kinda frustrated at the moment as I am still yet to receive a response from them. No email acknowledgement for my appeal or text reply to my messages. I even had to relay my message to the admission’s office, and received a response that my case was still pending for their decision. They would prolly think that we wouldn’t endure the hell of law school and or that we might not be fit for it. I argue differently. We are fit for everything. We have suffered and endured many hardships from every word unspoken that somehow melts our insides. To relate with my circumstances, even with the struggles of my stuttering, I have endured many injustices in my country that led me to want to be a human rights lawyers, to contribute to a more inclusive society as a person with disability. Sorry for making this message long. As I’ve said, my circumstances atm is this and it is hell. I still hope for a more just and humane society. Apply to any course you want. Be a lawyer or at least, strive to be.
