I think that it depends a lot on the person. For example, hypnosis is actually used to treat stuttering, and for what I read in some people is very effective although only at short term. I think that forgetting completely about your stuttering, or giving it absolutely zero importance, has the same effectiveness as an hypnosis session. I also think that it mostly depends on the reason you stutter; if it is only psychological, if you have an abnormality in your brain, or if it is both. For example, usually when I get nervous because I'm in a sutuation where I have to talk but I do not want people to notice my stuttering, I actually stutter less than if I relax. I also remember the first time I stuttered. I was like 7 years, and believe me that I remember it perfectly because I got very afraid; I was in class, talking fluent, and suddenly I couldn't pronounce the word I wanted to say. I didn't know what was happening to me nor what a stuttering disorder was.
