If I took my stuttering into consideration, I would have never became a big city Firefighter/EMT. And it's not a "romantic leap of faith". If you're qualified for the job then you have every right to pursue it. Plain and simple. Don't short change yourself. Live the life you want to live because you only get one. Your only weakness is your self perception.
