Lots of people struggle to transfer fluency techniques from practising with a therapist or on their own to the “real world”. This is usually the hardest part of therapy. Stuttering tends to be worse when the processing demands of a situation are higher. Likewise, it is harder to use fluency techniques in more demanding speaking situations. The key is to practice your techniques in the least demanding situations first. Once you have mastered this you move up to the next least challenging situation. Try writing a list of 10 people/speaking situations, then number them starting with 1 as the least challenging up to 10 as the most demanding. Focus on practising your techniques in situation 1 and only move on to number 2 when you have mastered the first.
