A positive story

A positive story Hi all, I have been lurking on here for a little bit now as a way to see what other people go through with their stutters, and it has been great to see people going through the same things that I do. I just wanted to share my story, as maybe it will help others have some confidence in their own skin. I am graduating college this May and have therefore been applying to jobs. Back in January I had an interview for my top choice job, and I was incredibly nervous, mostly due to my stutter (something I am sure many of you can understand). I was qualified for the job, but I was worried my stutter would invalidate me and my accomplishments and qualifications. I made the choice, however, to own it as a part of me. At some point in the interview, public speaking came up. I decided to be true to myself, and I mentioned to them that I have a stutter, and that it is something that I work through. Their response warmed my heart, and made me feel so much better about myself. They said that they were impressed with the fact that I was even pushing myself to interview, and they complimented me on my fluency. It was incredibly validating, and I believe it helped separate me from other possible candidates in their mind. It gave me personality, and showed that I can overcome challenges. Long story short, I got the job this week! I am still nervous about what the future brings, but the message I am telling myself (and you all through this post) is that you should all own your stutter. Stuttering does not invalidate you, or the other many good features of you as a person. Don't be afraid to tell people that you have a stutter, and don't be ashamed when you say it. This mentality has brought me a ton of confidence with how I carry myself, and it has changed how I react to a block. I hope that my story can help someone own themselves and take back their narrative.
