Breaking a leg and stuttering are not analogous at all. You don’t stutter less by trying harder to not stutter. In fact, the more you try to not stutter, the more you stutter. Using words like “defeating” is a red flag. The more you are aggressive towards the stutter, the more you guarantee it will stick around. Reducing stuttering means relaxing, allowing, letting it be, doing stuff anyway, talking anyway. Many people will say they have “become fluent”, but often I find they misunderstand the word “fluent” to mean “never audibly stuttering.” “Fluent” means *not stuttering, without even trying to not stutter.* If you are using a huge amount of energy and doing a lot of speech techniques to produce speech that doesn’t have any stutters, that’s not fluent. It’s energy that you could have spent thinking about the content of your conversation, but weren’t.
