You are right when pointing out that reading out loud is not even close to replicate real interactions. Actually, you may feel even more discouraged when you felt like you have made progress reading out loud, but still stutters when facing real conversations. However, it has really led me to better articulate, manage my breathing and my speech pace, which somehow helped me with my stuttering. Then, I think it is still an interesting exercise. Very good second point :)
