When my stuttering was really bad (9th & 10th grades) my Parents heard about hypnosis as an effective therapy for improving speech patterns. I tried that and it calmed down my breathing patterns a bit whenever speaking in public was necessary. Never did I think that 10-12 yrs later would I have proof that my speech impediment wasn’t in my “psyche” but in fact within my chest cavities! So if unable to initiate proper diaphragmatic breathing patterns regularly (while standing) I highly recommend lying in bed(FLAT), maybe having a script to read from and rest your (non-dominant) hand over your stomach. Feeling the rise/fall of your diaphragm will initiate diaphragmatic breathing after a few seconds…before you even realize it. I also encourage anyone who has used my previous recommendations to look up “Tuvan Throat Singers.” I only suggest this bc back in college I took a music course as a free-elective. In a previous post, I talked about the vocal folds and the speech articulators coupled with diaphragmatic breathing will offer you FLUENCY. If anyone takes the time to look up Tuvan Throat Singers while also using the phrase my SLP suggested, you’ll notice exact feeling of vibration within your own voice and voice box that the Tuvan Singers use! All FLUENT!
