“She needs to work on her talking skills.” Overheard a coworker saying this. I’m not totally sure if it was about me but I don’t know who else it could be about. Anyway, I was so hurt and angry that I had to leave early. Talking skills. Talking. Skills. Like talking is something that one has to hone and develop. That, unlike lazy old me, 99% of people put in the work to achieve. That, if only I’d worked on these “skills”, I’d speak fluently like him. Because surely he did a damn good job honing these skills! I’m so fucked up right now and it isn’t even just because of his comment. It’s because I know that many people feel the exact same way he does. Many people have implied that Im not trying hard enough etc etc and there’s nothing worse. When people implied that I was special needs; sure, that hurt. But implying (or in his case, straight up saying) that I’m a failure who didn’t try hard enough is god awful. Now not only do I have to be anxious about people thinking I’m slow; I have to be anxious about people judging me for not working on these “skills”. Like they themselves clearly did. 🙄 I don’t even know how I’ll be able to open my mouth again.
