It's called a secondary stuttering behavior, and it usually develops as a way for people to physically overcome the stutter - but it ends up becoming part of the stutter itself. It may be similar to a tic, as stuttering has neurological links to conditions like Tourette's. If your stuttering and secondary behaviors bother you and make you feel uncomfortable when communicating, it's not a bad idea to see a Speech Language Pathologist for help.
