Here is my story with my public speaking class in my computer science major. We are in the same position, I stutter severely, I had to take a speaking class for my core classes. What I did was not seek any personal disability oriented "escape" route. I knew I had to take the class, I knew I wanted a degree (last year anyways), and I didn't want any special help. So, I decided to take the class like a normal person or risk not being able to get a degree since every program requires a public speaking class. I pulled my then 23 year old ass up by the bootstrap and prepared for 16 weeks of humiliation. So, the first day of Public Speaking I prepared myself for the worst. I already knew I had to take the class. First things first, class introductions. Being a severe stutterer it was obvious to the class that I was different from the introduction. Long story short, I told the instructor that I stuttered and obviously this means that none of my speeches are going to be great. HOWEVER, I built very good speeches, I built nice power points, and I tried my best to follow the instructor's pointers that she gave the class during lecture. I made sure every speech met all the requirements. I didn't enjoy it and the class probably didn't like to listen to me struggle for 6 minutes per speech (we had to give a total of 4 speeches during the semester) but I did it because I felt like I had to. I received an A in the class.
