My experiences with my stutter I'm new to this board, but after responding to a prior post regarding stuttering today, I had to create my own post sharing my experiences and what I've learned ranging from various treatments, to "winning" my social security disability case, to a discrimination settlement because of my stutter. Basic background - 38 yr old male, stuttered since I was a kid, and a graduate of a major State University in accounting and finance. I, my parents, etc have probably spent over 50K over the years to correct my stutter. Ranging from Speech therapy countless times, Speech Easy device, Neurofeedback therapy, CBD oil, medications, vitamins and the list goes on. Even though I stutter and often times have a severe stutter, I'm actually very confident I will beat this. My stutter is NOT a developmental stutter. I don't have issues pronouncing a particular word or words. It's a more a neuro or psychological issue (that's my best guess). If I can remember right, I DID have issues as a kid pouncing certain words, I think "S" and "R"'s. I DID "win" my social security disability case several years ago based solely on my stutter, no attorneys, nothing, but it did take about 21 months after applying from application to court. Thankfully I'm NOT on SSDI and am gainfully employed. Stuttering IS considered a disability and is under Title I with the 1990 American's with Disability Act. It is considered a mental impairment. I have won and got a cash settlement by myself (no lawyers) with an employer I interviewed with that came right out and said he couldn't hire me b/c of my stutter. If you've been discriminated against because your stutter by an employer, you should do your research, consider going through the EEOC or your State's Civil Right's Division. Going through the State Civil Rights Division vs the EEOC HAD several advantages. So it was almost 2 years ago when I realized something after getting a Google Home (like an alexa). B/c of the Google Home I found out I was ALWAYS 100% fluent when I'd read or talk out loud to myself. I never discovered that before. I've read that some other stutters have the same issue but my thoughts are WHY?!? WHY can I be 100% fluent all the time when I read or talk out loud by myself, but If I got into a SOCIAL situation, sometimes barely get a few words out?! That doesn't make sense nor was acceptable to be like oh well it happens with a lot of other stutterers, that was NOT ok with me as it makes zero sense. If I could go back - I think I'd try these.. \*\*\*In no way am I a doctor or health expert\*\*\* and as of right now, I haven't found a solution but I'm very hopeful. Take B1 (Thiamine HCl NOT monotrate) , 300 mg daily. I personally took more than the 300 mg, I did more like 1K mg daily. There's been several studies where approximately 60-70% are cured by B1. Some of the studies included magnesium (prefer magn. glycinate as it is more absorable. apparently Magnesium oxide has the worst/lowest absorbability). Take B complex vitamins.. I've seen several studies where people have taken B complex 2X a day and it's "cured" them. Hypnosis and meditation - There's a Youtube video "Hypnosis for stuttering" by Angela Peters. I've only done this twice in the last 7 days, it actually calls for 21-28 days straight. This is at night and you can do it at home before bed, it puts you to sleep. There's several other hypnosis on Youtube, and other meditation that I've just been looking at. on Youtube, search for stuff like brain waves, meditation, the channel I have as a favorite is DhyaanGuru Dr. Nipun Agarwal. I also have a favorite of Unlock your life channel as they have meditation sounds as well. I've tried CBD - no positive effects, HOWEVER like everything else, what might not work for me, MIGHT work for you. There are CBD out there that doesn't have THC in it. I tried both. Neurofeedback therapy / Neuro therapy.. This is very interesting, and unfortunately can get expensive (insurance may take it). There has been several cases where it has cured stuttering. Unfortunately after about 30-35 sessions for me, there has been no improvement. However I think the best thing I've got out of this treatment is digging deep down into the brain, nervous system, anxiety related issues etc. Once again, what might not work for me, MIGHT work for you. If I could redo this, I think I'd try a tDCS device at home first which runs about $200-$300. The University of Michigan is currently doing a clinical trial for stuttering using a tDCS device. [https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03437512](https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03437512) Blood flow / oxygen to the brain - I've read a bit about this, but I don't think it's my issue. Cardio helps this as well as some vitamins such as (i think) ginko biilba (spelling?). I'm currently trying B Complex, B1, B6 and B12, and HTP, plus magnesium. ( most vitamins are safe, however.. just be careful).. I actually just added the HTP today. Along with the vitamins, I'm trying the at home hypnosis / meditation sounds like I mentioned above. I also want to find more time to talk/read out loud by myself in the mirror.. I've read people doing this on a consistent basis and overcoming stuttering. If these vitamins / hypnosis / meditation sounds don't work. I think I will try the tDCS device and continue to research until I found a solution. I DO believe it's a vitamin / maybe amino acid deficiency OR a psychological issue which hypnosis / meditation sounds might help. For the first time ever, I am very confident I will find a solution. Speech therapy .. Tried this, multiple times over the years and didn't work. In my opinion, speech therapy helps if it's a developmental stutter. Speech Easy Device - I tried this in 2004-2006, didn't work. I also did try Xanax.. but didn't like the side effects, tireness etc. It did help to some extent, but I also didn't like the idea of being on that day after day for the rest of my life. I think one of the most important things is don't try something for a day or 2, or 5 days etc and give up. Try it for several weeks, or a month and see how it goes. Also, if you try vitamins, do your research. One of the most important things i found is get the vitamins that absorb the best / break the blood barrier. For instance B12 - if you get B12 Cyanocobalamin, it doesn't absorb as well as the B12 Methylcobalamin. Or B1 thiamin hcl absorbes better than the monotriate. How it was explained the best to me is think of alcohol, it hits the blood barrier right away. But say.. if you take a reduced amount of a particular vitamin or something that doesn't absorb as well, it might not break that blood barrier and have no effect. Anyway, those are some thoughts. Like I said, I haven't beat stuttering yet, but very confident I will. If you try medications, or vitamins, do your own research and/or speak with a doctor. I will try to answer any questions as best as possible and I will update this in the future when I finally found MY perfect solution. Best of luck to all!
