Here’s what I’ve observed after 40 years of working with PWS. They are typically wired “to go fast.” Using fluency or “handling” techniques is a temporary overlay that often works for a short while… but that fast hardwired processor is always there. It takes a ton of conscious awareness, and work to use the tools and stay fluent over time. It’s like on one side of the brain you have to be thinking about the techniques and on the other side you have to be thinking about the conversation you’re having with someone. It’s hard to do both. All of it is work—Constant work and awareness to overcome the hardwiring. Consider identifying on paper in your “success log” what techniques work for you and spending 10 or 15 minutes each morning practicing them and getting into the speaking mojo for the day.
