I’m a speech therapist and my therapy is always person driven. If they want to learn techniques to make their speech more clear, then we will work on that. We spend a lot of time doing more situational therapy than we do working on the actual speech. I always ask the person what their goal for therapy is and that drives what we’re doing. We definitely talk about what stuttering is and that there is no known cure. I tell them that I will show them techniques/tools that they may choose to use if they would like their speech to sound different. Ultimately, though, it is up to the person to decide whether or not to use certain techniques. My job is not to fix stuttering, rather it is to help the person communicate and be the person who they are.
