In my experience, this is all that matters. You can do a lot to prepare, but you can't practice-away your stutter. The bit of humor in this quote is great too. I've never had ANYONE treat me insensitively after making those announcements. People react poorly because they're confused, so tell them exactly what is going on. Then from that point, everyone else adjusts to you for a change.
