This is exactly how I ended up in the military then with the federal government. Military service is a family tradition so it was always an option for me and once I was in there was enough job security that my non verbal skills were able to speak for me. After the military still noone would hire me, like you said, never got past the interview so I transferred my pension to the civil service and learned a new trade. Good luck, it's a big fight to get established.
