I have a developmental stutter that was triggered by a traumatic brain injury. A developmental stutter is neither neurogenic or psychological but can manifest characteristics of both - can be alleviated by speech therapy unlike neurogenic conditions. I had a family / childhood history of speech disfluencies which is essential to a developmental stutter. After my tbi my stutter was pretty bad for a couple years in middle school and high school, and speech therapy helped. I can have weeks or months of good fluency and then randomly hit phases of disfluency. Psychoactive substances also have affects on it, both negative and positive depending on the situation and chemical. Ordering at restaurants can be difficult sometimes, saying my name, and asking questions too. The longer I talk about complicated subjects the more I stutter. I, the, words starting with S, are, and cuh sounds are typically more difficult. Also I am a guy and sometimes girls are put off by it but some are attracted to it. Never been bullied for it but I’ve felt judgement from peers who don’t know me very personally.
