Love all the advice here. Bc stuttering is situational and variable it is confusing…one min fluent the next not. Predictable on some terms, I always know which words I feel a stutter or block before I say them, and yet, unpredictable that in other situations I am totally fluent. Learning to love myself as a stutterer and share that with others. Sounds like introducing yourself as a stutterer js proving challenging? I would hope it might buy you some space and time to let others know you have a speech difference. Have you tried intentional stuttering? Allow yourself to stutter, your way, your pace…plan your stutter! It can be pretty powerful to know you have accepted your stutter and can choose how you want to do jt. You don’t have to avoid it or cover it up—that takes way more energy than allowing yourself to stutter —-might feel like a big stretch tho. Also, have you worked with a metronome? There’s a pacing strategy that does sound less natural but if you can allow your body to align with rhythm, it can really help with coordinating all the speech muscles. Reminds me of using a character voice or singing, helps to bypass the sticking points. I had a lot of difficulty with silent blocks when answering the phone in college. I was largely a covert stutterer at that point (so good at avoiding and covering up, circumlocuting). I wasn’t successful to say hello (such fear of stutter + time urgent situation) but I could say, “Hi! This is Jada.” I found something that worked but really i wished I could have felt more comfortable accepting and allowing for an easy onset, gentle h-h-h-hello. It’s a sound repetition —and for anyone that’s bothered by it—-I could have let them know it’s not contagious 😂!
