This may sound a bit cruel, but I sometimes look at these interactions as playing a video game and talking with an NPC. They say their lines, I responded as needed. If I want to make small talk, I'll try. If they're friendly, awesome. If not, they're just another NPC having a bad day. Every day is another chance to succeed. There's good days and bad days, but all we can do is try again next time.
