Everyday I’m learning more and it boils down to one thing As someone who had developed a stutter from childhood, here are my take aways . I remember vividly as clear as yesterday that when I was talking to my primary school teacher I was getting out of breath and still pushing i paused and I remember myself saying “it’s my breath” Troughout the years as I had gotten older it grew into something more complex and I thought it was going to be impossible to treat this problem because so many things come to play with it right ? It’s physical, you feel it sometimes either in your throat or stomach or even mouth/jaw it physically cramps right , you feel tensions, therefore what do you do ? How do you even reduce the cramping . It’s psychological because you’ve known for a while this what you are and you’ll have to live with it (you won’t have to) This is what you deal with ,it became part of your identity therefore it affects your mental image of yourself it effects your mentality this is how your brain works now it right what do you even do ? Interestingly enough all these problems seem to be near existent when you’re on your own or relaxed that’s the key word here, relaxed. Today I had an appointment with a social worker I told her of my stutter and right of the start i was more relaxed and allowed myself to openly stutter instead of allowing the blocks but what I noticed half way our conversation or even later , that I’ve felt something build up in my stomach , because of this I couldn’t get the words out I was pretty much choking on the words I’ve been just been pronouncing flawlessly ,after collecting my breath and trying to slow down a bit it eased and I could speak better. I think this for me proves that it all boils to tension ,I’ve felt this tension build in my stomach and I tried to relax slowed down it got slightly better. But it was also tiring .When you talk for a long time you need to listen to your body and even if you become more fluent just know that it asks energy talking in general costs energy, this is something stutterers have to learn too to try to be able to talk for longer periods without being worn out it’s something you’ll have to get used too as your speech improves. as I had gotten back home I felt at ease , the buildup from moments ago was gone this is basically what it is , it leaves the body too, as a kid/teen I thought that once if I I stuttered badly in a situation i thought I was in that same state, particular sentence: or word I’d have to avoid those words but this just feeds that image that while yes you may stutter, you have moments of fluency like every normal Person does :). And my point is listen to your body, to your breathing try to do some deep relaxations on the daily and notice the difference because it really boils to how we breath ,regulating our energy levels. No matter how bad your speech is .You need to stop and listen and work from there on.
