So I've found, more often than not, places like big supermarkets/strip malls/multiplex type stores have supervisors that like to believe themselves as more important than everyone else in the room. Its a function of huge, capitalist-type enterprises. I'm not sure why, but I've noticed it everywhere I've applied before. Instead, try applying to non-profits. Museums, colleges, some hospitals and other NGOs. They tend to have a more understanding cast of characters(maybe less so in hospitals, but I'm not entirely sure). Unfortunately, this may mean less manual labor jobs to offer. And this may only be true where I live, though(MA), but it might worth a try.
