It helps me, but I also realize most people desire eye contact when speaking to an individual. I've kind of learned a little trick where I kind of slightly offset the direction I'm looking while physically keeping my face straight forward so that it almost looks like I'm still looking forward to most while I'm kind of staring off to the left. It helps me, and it usually helps the other people think I'm still engaged in the conversation. It works for me, but your mileage, as always, may vary.
