Are you actually stuttering more, or are you just noticing the stutter you already have more? Your stuttering friend might just be causing you to pay more attention to your own speech. Part of building up our confidence as stutterers is to accept our stutter and not think too much about it in our normal day-to-day lives. This confidence also results in us stuttering less. However, when we think about stuttering, perhaps through talking with another stutterer or listening to a recording of our own voice, or reading about stuttering, we start paying more attention to our own speech patterns. The normal stutter that we've become accustomed to now seems 'worse' simply because we are paying more attention to it. This also knocks our confidence so with a lack of confidence, we stutter more...and so the feedback loop continues. But this is a great opportunity to not only support your stuttering friend, but to gain more confidence in your own fluency through growing awareness and acceptance of your own speech patterns.
