I don't believe there's one method that works for everyone. If there were, it would be so simple. You can't know for sure whether it would have cured you forever or not, many people go through therapy as kids and the stutter still comes back. But I understand how you might feel. I had school phobia in high school and locked myself in my room, not going to classes. I also spent a year after high school shut away in my room. At that time, I was completely mute. I think having very little social interaction really doesn't help when it comes to improving communication.
