I actually got disability money for it when it was at its worse. A psychiatrist employed by the government agreed that stuttering hindered my chances of finding employment and gave me money for it so I could survive. It’s not enough to actually live on and I had to get a job eventually, I had no choice. I got a job at Walmart as a people greeter. I was forced to talk to strangers and after doing that for a while my stutter went away, I’d say im at around 85% fluency. Getting nervous makes it worse still but I can speak up for myself now and people can’t walk over me anymore. Im 40 years old. Stuttering should be listed under the ADA and we should be protected by law from having jobs turn us away for our stutter. I can’t count how many times a interviewer wouldn’t hire me because I went into complete block mode while trying to answer a question. That’s even after I told them I stuttered.
