I have “cured” my stutter several times in my life by doing all sorts of things (e.g. diets, herbs, medications). However, the long-term results have always been a reemergence of the stutter, often appearing overnight on sounds/words that I thought I had mastered. Fluency modification strategies (e.g., priming my vocal folds, light articulated contact, speaking with less projection, and speaking slower) are the only genuine tools I have found to provide me consistency. While genetic and physiological factors are present, they do not appear deterministic of stuttering (i.e., why can I speak the same sounds fluently for years and have a failure on the third repetition of a sound? Why can I read text aloud in front of 100 people and not 2?) One must remember that stuttering is poorly conflated “catchall” term to describe a communicative disorder that involves gradients of physical coordination and psychological resiliency factors affecting fluency. My TLDR point is that there is no magic pill cure. Supplements and medications may help with the anxiety of a PWS, but behavioralism (e.g., desensitization and habit hijacking) is the only principled approach that helps maintain long-term fluency and (more importantly) recovery when the stutter morphs and the pills no longer work.
