This sucks (rant) Work in IT as a systems engineer. 90% of my life is stutter free. If I’m comfortable with people, I VERY seldom have a block, and if I do, it’s incredibly minor. I can talk sports, politics, work topics, give presentations, you name it. The key is, that I know them…. If I have to give my name, I get a severe block… “Hi I’m A—————-Andy “ I get the weirded out looks, the awkward “nice to meet you” and IMMEDIATELY shift to someone else to talk to. I learned to cope with alcohol years ago, it’s like WD40 for my speech. If I know I’m meeting someone that day, just don’t eat, then drink about 4-5 shots of vodka 45 mins before and I’m fine. No problem… Today a vendor caught me off guard. Stopped in to “say hi” that they were “in the area” everyone else stood up to meet them and I began to hyperventilate without my grey goose crutch, ran to the bathroom instead and looked like a total freak. Hiding in the bathroom stall at my lowest confidence level in years right now waiting for them to leave. I don’t know what to do. They will never invent a drug to fix this, i get to enjoy this curse for the rest of my life.
