I think what you're referring to may be a secondary behavior or physical concomitant. Meaning, the facial movements (or hand movements, etc.) could be learned behaviors that at one point helped get through a moment of stuttering. Eventually, those behaviors become habitual and no longer help get through moments of stuttering, but you still do them.
