Studies have shown that at very young ages the distribution of male and female stutterers is about even. As they grow through preschool years the females are able to pick up language skills faster than the males. The theory is that males develop more slowly and are more susceptible to many disorders like stuttering, mental illness, etc. Adult distribution is about 4:1 males.
