The cause of stuttering is differences in our auditory processing system and our internal timing, which is what supports fluent speech and what the basal ganglia is partly responsible for. I believe there is also evidence of lack of blood flow to the language area of the brain in people who stutter, so it's all of these combined that cause stuttering. Yes people who suffer from psychological trauma can develop stuttering, but this is different from development stuttering. "True" stuttering is neurophysiological in nature and more likely to be passed on via genetics, whereas psychological stuttering is not. Either way, there is no known cure for developmental stuttering. \-Speech pathology grad student and person who stutters!
