First of all, thanks for asking in this subreddit, really shows you go above and beyond to get better at your job and also shows a great deal of empathy! To answer your question, I personally have always been upfront about my stuttering at interviews as it takes the ‘tension’ away cause I know you as the recruiter will notice and think about it. However, if I didn’t mention it myself, I personally would be completely okay with you asking a question or two about it, especially if you’re framing it in a positive way like and removing stigma. I don’t know how to phrase such a question right here and now but maybe something along the lines of “I notice that you stutter occasionally, which is totally okay, but if you feel comfortable I’d like to know how stuttering has influenced you / shaped you / benefitted you in some areas?” Which would allow us to explain how it’s taught us resilience, being thoughtful before speaking, taught empathy for other people’s weaknesses etc. I’d like to hear from the community what you think about my thoughts, as I’m quite comfortable with my stuttering and the above might not be comfortable to answer for everyone with a stutter. Finally, I’d like to ask you as a recruiter, what would you prefer? Would you prefer having it mentioned so you can have a causal conversation about it or are you completely indifferent / don’t care, cause that’s not what’s important for assessing if the interviewee is a good fit the job?
