I, in spite of a then-moderate stutter, became a champion in community-college level competitive trivia. Getting my little team to two community college championships, and a 4-year college national championship. I lost a few matches and was in part resented for it (I was given a tinge of leeway in regards to timing, and some people actually thought I was faking it) but succeeded wildly in spite of it. I think, by and large, that the confidence boost it helped inspire played a large part in me more or less losing my stutter within a period of three odd years. To the point where it is just about at mild level (At least, when I was last evaluated). I'm now on the cusp of graduating college full on, and will probably go into law school. Something I never thought, as I stutterer, I'd ever be able to pursue.
