I can assure you that it isn't better to be mute. Your frustrations will build up and it will become too much to reasonably manage. Job opportunities can be pretty rough when you have a hard time communicating to people. The best advice I have is to let everyone around you know you have a stutter. Being completely open about it - although easier said than done, that's for sure - is one of the only ways I've found that helps me. Being open and honest with employers about what challenges you face can get you some pretty surprising results, and often ones that will get you a job you want. People want to help out, genuinely, but they can't if you're "mute". Because you can't afford therapy at the moment (neither can I, I feel you), I do recommend continuing to browse the internet for advice and strategies. This reddit alone is a great spot, and there's a pretty deep history of posts on here to browse through whenever you have time. Best of luck!
