I would not at all be surprised if stutterers have a genetic mutation that either increases the amount of energy that neurons expend or a specific issue with thiamine transporters. This mutation may be so minor that all other organs, such as the heart and brain, are able to function normally, but more delicate and energy intensive organs such as brain may struggle to keep up behind the scenes, resulting in stuttering.
