Some people go through fight or flight response when they encounter scary situations. For people that stutter, our speech impediment over time trains our nervous system that speaking is ‘scary’. When we block, our brain is going through freeze or flight response. So our brain is literally trying to get us out of what is perceives as scary situation. This is why behavioral therapy like CBT for social anxiety can be immensely helpful for people that stutter.
