As a PWS who had mostly hard, silent blocks and semi-automatic eye contact avoidance, my stuttering was simply confusing to listeners. It sometimes appeared as if I was having a medical situation, and I often couldn’t say things with the appropriate tone/timing/cadence. This resulted in people thinking I was angry, interrupting, or upset. These listeners weren’t hateful or rude - just confused and concerned for me. A tow truck driver misheard the address I gave and he had gotten in his truck before I could get out correct address. When I corrected him, I was visibly upset and told him I have a speech disorder, and he just apologized (and didn’t charge more) when he had to drive to correct address. I could rarely thank cashiers, waitresses, etc because I’d be holding up the line, and this made me feel terrible and rude. No one ever made a comment - I simply felt sad inside. Just wanted to convey another aspect of stuttering.
