Any advice for situations where you try to say a certain word but just can't? Hello, I would like to first say that English is not my main language so please excuse for my writing. I've been a fairly long stutterer and sometimes talking is not much of an issue and it doesn't seem to impact everyday situations, whereas in some situations it becomes an issue. It has become somewhat more manageable over the years as I've trained myself to just speak slower, which generally tremendously helps talking like "normal". But one thing that I just sometimes can't manage is that I simply can't say a certain word. I know what word I should say and it doesn't even have to be a complex one, but when I open my mouth and want to say it I just am unable to so. Even if I visualize it, it just doesn't come out. There are certain words that I know I struggle to say (and I tend to use substitute or synonyms words, though I dunno if it's ultimately a good idea apart from getting your point across) but sometimes even with the simplest words it is an issue and I have no idea when it happens. I feel like I'm running out of breath when going to say the word which probably impacts it. I usually somehow just end up saying it in a weird way after some pause, or end up repeating the previous words like 5-7 times. And the weird thing is, if a person I'm talking to knows what word I'm trying to say and says it, I can almost immediately say it as well. So I'm asking, fellow stutterers, how do you manage such problem? Has anyone here managed to heavily reduce the occurence of not being able to say a particular word? Or even better, managed to "cure" themselves out of that? I have absolute no problem when trying to say any word when I'm by myself (or say, am "talking" to my dog) but in social situations with people I just stutter no matter who I am talking to. When I'm feeling good and confident all around I stutter less, but it never goes away completely.
