8 year old son Hi everyone. I have been lurking around and reading up on stuttering. My 8 year old son has been stuttering for a few years. He was born with spina bifida (full time wheelchair user) and has something called thoracic insufficiency syndrome. He has severe kyphosis (as opposed to scoliosis his spine forms more of a hump back) his spine was crushing his lungs and diaphragm. He has gotten multiple surgeries and help him be more upright and breathe without issue. So naturally he has some medial induced anxiety and stress. Between his breathing issues and anxiety, his stutter hasn’t improved. My question is for those who have gone through speech therapy, did it benefit at all? His stuttering seems as though he can’t get enough air. But now I am beginning to think it’s all anxiety. He also has some sensory issues and was diagnosed with executive functioning disorder. Which is fairly common with kids who have spina bifida and hydrocephalus. I honestly feel like we’re all alone with this. He has such specialized conditions and no one is focusing on what they consider non important. They say “oh he will grow out of that” or “we need to focus on other issues”. He’s such a happy dude who loves people and to interact. But he’s older and now becoming more aware of his stuttering. I don’t want him to lose his spark. Thanks guys for reading my rambling.
