You can do medical research if you don't want to interact with patients. I know people who stutter who are/were doctors, college professors, teachers, VP of a company, engineers, etc. Of course, if you don't feel comfortable and confident in your position then the patients won't feel comfortable either. So really it is up to you. Only the ignorant and impatient will tell you not to pursue something you enjoy.
