Career Advice with Respect to Stuttering To preface, I am 20 years old. I dropped out of college earlier this year after one semester (for a combination of reasons which isn’t really relevant). I was generally a good student, in high school as well. However, I have not crossed out the prospect of returning to college eventually. With all this in mind, my stutter always lurks in the background. When brainstorming about potential careers and paths, I will always mentally cross out things that seem to require too much speaking (consumer businesses, medical field, anything with clients, etc.). Maybe it’s a form of avoidance. Maybe it’s just process of elimination. However, I am comfortable with some degree of speaking. Hopefully this makes some sense. Anyways, I’m currently doing research into the Air Force. Not sure if it will interest me, but I don’t want to work odd jobs in the same small town that I grew up in for the rest of my life. It seems like a nice option to see different parts of the world and gather general experience. People also say “follow your passions”, but I don’t agree. I have interests and hobbies, but I believe those are different from passions. I have never had a strong desire to do any particular thing in my life. Maybe I just need to experience more things. To get to the point, how can I find out what I want to do in life, with stuttering in mind. To reiterate, my speech does not control my desires and dreams, but it is a challenge nonetheless. Maybe this process is normal and takes time, but I think it would help me to get some insight from people who share or have been through my particular situation.
